Digital transformation is changing both industry and higher education, giving universities a new role as builders of intelligent digital ecosystems. Most research looks at industrial digital transformation and university digitalization as separate topics. Few studies examine how universities can do both at once: drive digital transformation projects while also training engineers through these same platforms. This paper introduces the University-Led Intelligent Digital Platform Framework (UIDPF), a conceptual framework built using Design Science Research methodology. UIDPF has six connected layers: data sources, integration and interoperability, AI and analytics, governance and cybersecurity, decision support and smart services, and engineering competency development. What sets UIDPF apart from typical digital platform models is its sixth layer. Engineering competency development is treated as a core architectural component, not an afterthought. This means real industrial digital transformation projects can be woven directly into engineering curricula, giving students hands-on experience with live systems rather than simulations alone. The framework draws on digital platform theory, the Triple Helix model of university-industry-government collaboration, Industry 4.0 competency research, and intelligent information systems design. To show how UIDPF works in practice, the paper presents the MineVision and GeoSearch CORE project as an illustrative case of university-led digital transformation in industry. This example demonstrates how an intelligent digital platform can handle data integration, AI-driven analytics, governance and cybersecurity, decision support, and experiential learning all within one system. By extending platform theory to university-industry ecosystems, UIDPF contributes a transferable model for preparing engineers who can lead digital transformation efforts across industrial sectors.
